Are you planning to shift to solar panels for electricity? The ₹78,000 subsidy under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a good place to start.
But wait — does every homeowner get ₹78,000?
No. The subsidy depends on the size of your rooftop solar system.
Let’s break down the numbers. #
The central subsidy for residential rooftop solar works like this:
- 1 kW system: ₹30,000 subsidy
- 2 kW system: ₹60,000 subsidy
- 3 kW or more: Up to ₹78,000 subsidy
This means, for a 3 kW rooftop system, it works out to a maximum central subsidy of ₹78,000.
Not a fixed amount for every household. Not a cashback on every solar installation.
What does this mean for your home? #
When your electricity bill goes up, you start thinking about solar. Then you see the installation cost and pause.
This is where the subsidy can help. It cuts down the upfront cost of an eligible rooftop solar system. After installation, the power you generate at home can also reduce how much electricity you need from the grid.
Two different benefits. One solar investment.
But who can actually get it? #
If you’re planning rooftop solar for your home, start by checking your eligibility on the PM Surya Ghar National Portal before going ahead with the installation. The portal takes you through the application process and tells you what you need to do to claim the Solar subsidy.
Before you plan for ₹78,000 #
Remember one important thing.
You don’t need to install the biggest system to get the maximum subsidy.
Your electricity consumption, available roof space, and system size all matter.
A smaller home may need a smaller system. A larger household with higher electricity use may benefit from a bigger one.
So, the better starting point is not “How do I get ₹78,000?”
It is:
What size of rooftop solar system makes sense for my home? #
